There was a woman
at a well, one day
Near a city of
Samaria, in a land far away.
There she met a
Stranger, who changed her life that day,
For He gave her
living water-from
The Truth, the
Life, the way.
She left her
waterpot, there by the well,
Ran into the city-
for she must tell
That she had met the Messiah at the well
DALE EVANS ROGERS
Though unnamed,
the woman at the well was an audacious exploratory woman who constantly sought
ways to slake her thirst as well as satisfy the desires and longings of her
heart. The quest for self satisfaction culminated in the series of non
satisfying marital relationships – five husbands and a current live in lover
that she could not call a husband. Please see John Chapter 4 verses 16 to 18.
Perhaps, this
quest was also the reason she went to fetch water at a time when women do not
go to fetch water or perhaps, it was a ploy to avoid the sniggers and sneers of
other supposedly lucky women who had maritally fulfilling relationships and had
probably not gone her string of five husbands and a current live in lover.
Whatever it was, this journey to the well at the odd hour turned out to be a
life changing, life transforming encounter for this very beautiful woman of
Samaria; accustomed to attention from the male folk (five husbands and a live
in lover is no mean feat for any woman. If in doubt, please attempt it, though
I do not advise it as it is not really scriptural.
Fortunately for
this woman, this male attention was different and unique. The Person giving her
attention was neither interested in her beauty nor her femininity and all that the
femininity would offer to any man. Rather, this attention from a male folk she
did not know was directed at her eternity.
Audaciously, she
questioned his request for water from her considering that their ethnicities differed.
But the “Stranger” was unperturbed by her audacity as he progressively
introduced Himself to her until she realized that she was in a discourse with
the Savior of her life. Willingly, she submitted to His Lordship, requesting
for Living Water.
Fully satisfied,
she practically ran all the way into the city of Samaria and proclaimed the
Good News of salvation that you and I have the responsibility of proclaiming
globally. The supposedly woman of questionable morals – five husbands and a
live in lover had become the propagator of the Good News of salvation turning a
whole city over to Christ.
The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way
into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things
that ever I did: is not this the Christ? Then they went out of the city, and
came unto him….. So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him
that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days. And many more
believed because of his own word; And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not
because of thy saying: for we have heard [him] ourselves, and know that this is
indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. Now after two days he departed
thence, and went into Galilee. John Chapter 4 verses 28 to 30, 39 to 43
Beloved, the woman
at the well in Samaria was used by God to bring spiritual healing to the city
of Samaria and its inhabitants. Upon hearing the woman’s testimony about Jesus
Christ, they went to see Jesus Christ, brought Jesus Christ to the city and salvation
coupled with the multidimensional benefits that salvation by faith in Christ
Jesus became the portion of the inhabitants of Samaria. In like manner, we can
become God’s healing streams in our families, neighborhoods, communities,
cities, institutions when we share the love of God for humanity through the
preaching of the gospel of Christ that brings life, healing and transformation
to people and nations. May God who alone rewards His own reward you greatly as
you work with Him to bring healing to the nations. Shalom
